About PAM Mod R34

How to use it - Why to use it

A short instruction by MrElchbau
(grammar checking by gizmokid2005, some parts are translated by J.Neutron, thanks!)

History:  The PAM Mod R34 is an unofficial fork of the PortableApps.com Menu v1.0 (made by John T.Haller). netdroid9 changed the source code to add some features for interested users. Later, xrxca picked up the development of this mod. SmithTech later noticed that there were some limitations for theming in the code and changed it by adding some features although he's working on his own mod, the "SmithTech Portable Menu" (a menu with great features, you should have a look too).

We're hosting the PAM Mod R34 here and added some themes and an eject-script to demonstrate the new features.

 Features

  Categories

You've installed an app like OpenOffice.org. But wait! That is not only one app, it consists of more than one program. Very confusing. There are also so many apps in the list that it makes it easier to combine a few...

A simpe right-click to any app, choose "Add Category"

Insert a name (you can change it later)

Look, here's your folder:

Now we're right-clicking on the app we want to place in our folder. There we choose "Category" and then the name of the category we've created. In this case "OpenOffice".

Done! The app is now in your new "folder" (Category).

  Renaming

We placed all OpenOffice.org apps to the category "OpenOffice". But it looks quite stupid. We know that they are part of OpenOffice.org, because they are in our folder. And we also know that they are portable 'cause they are on our flash drive!

So simply right-click on "OpenOffice.org Calc Portable" and select "Rename App" and you can name it whatever you wish.

Before:

That's better:

  Moving

I've renamed them all. But I'm using Writer even often than the other apps. So it's better to place it on the top of the folder. Right-click, Move, Top...

Yeah! Much better.

  Hiding

Now I've added some categories and sorted my apps in them. This looks very clear, but not completely because there's an app called "EjectScript" left. One of my apps is using it, so I cannot delete it. But I don't want to see it in my apps list. What can I do?

You're right. Right-click, Hide, and it will not been shown any longer.

Executing Apps on Start or Exit

This is a nice feature. If you enable it (rightclick on an app, just choose "Autorun App" or "Exec on Close"), then chosen app will automatically run on start or exit. This could be very helpful, e.g. like shown in the pic left where "SIW" will be execute on startup. This app allows an admin to see the details of the connected PC immediately.

  Other Menu Commands

If you're clicking on "Options" or on the icon in the tray another menu will be shown. Some commands are very helpful:

Small Fonts/Large Fonts: as the name implies, this changes the font size in the menu.

Language: change your language.

Theme: change the theme.

Unhide Apps: all apps you hid will be shown again.

Add an External App: you can add an executable file to the apps list. It's like a Windows shortcut.

Stay Visible: the menu won't be hide if you swap to another window.

Disable Fade Effect: the menu will be shown/hide immediately without effects

Load Apps from DB: normally, when you start the menu, it scans the folder on your flash drive to find out what apps are installed. When you check this, it will start quickly, but doesn't recognize any newly installed apps, to recognize new apps, you will have to use "Resfresh Menus".

  Wallpaper Swap

If you want a special wallpaper shown while the menu is running you have to:

  • Enable "Enable Wallpaper Swap" (see pic above)

  • Put a BMP-file into your "PortableAppsMenu/Data" folder

  • Rename the BMP to "mywallpaper.bmp". Be sure it has the same resolution as your display, otherwise it will be stretched. The old wallpaper will be shown again when you exit the menu.(If you want that special wallpaper is shown with a specific theme, you have to rename the BMP similary, e.g. for the theme "PTC" you have to rename the BMP to "PTCwallpaper.bmp")

  Custom Folders

The R34 Mod Menu includes several icons that provide easy access to major folders in the standard portable applications system, such as Music, Pictures, etc. When clicked, these icons open up Internet Explorer and show the contents of the corresponding folder.

What if you don't use one of these folders and want the icon to open something else? What if you didn't follow a "standard" installation and have the files in a different place on your drive?

The R34 Mod Menu has a little-known feature - just right click on the folder icon and you can rename the icon. Better yet, you can have the icon linked to a different place on your drive. So, you could right-click the Videos icon and change the label to PDFs,...

...and then right-click again and change the directory to \Documents\PDFs

Now when you click on the icon, you'll open up your PDF folder! That's slick, isn't it?

  Themes

Hey, you're on PTC. That's short for "PortableApps Theme Central". We've got many themes in different sizes. Just click on "Themes" at the top of this page. You can use all in the category "PAM Mod". How to install is shown on How to Install Themes.
